Important Information Regarding LSEC classes:

• LSEC classes are scholarship funded to Active Duty Military, Retirees, The Department of the Army/Department of Defense Civilians, their family members and the members of the National Guard & Reserve Components. Active Duty soldiers have priority.
• Students MUST attend the first day of class or they will be dropped.
• Students are only eligible to enroll in 3 classes during an LSEC cycle.
• All Barton classes have a required minimum of 10 students. Classes that do not meet the student minimum are subject to cancellation.
• All students must enroll through Self-Service>Students via MyBarton by the published deadline below.
• Students are required to provide their own technology needed to attend the LiveOnline classes.
• Classes meet Monday-Friday unless otherwise posted.
• If no materials are listed for the class, all information needed will be provided in the course shell.

Students attending Barton Community College classes utilizing the Military (UOF) Scholarship will be dropped from their course(s) for non-attendance in accordance with the description/schedule listed below.

Non-Attendance

Students will be dropped for non-attendance for an unexcused absence on the first day of class. Attendance is defined as coming to the physical classroom or logging into the virtual classroom and actively participating for the duration of the instructional period.

What does LSEC mean?

LSEC stands for Leadership Skills Enhancement Courses.

Are these classes worth college credit?

Yes. The classes offered are general education courses worth college credit not only at Barton, but other colleges/universities as well.

Are they really free?

LSEC courses are not free. They are scholarship funded courses (no cost to those who are eligible).

Who qualifies to take these courses? 

• Students meeting the LSEC eligibility criteria below, must also be a legal Kansas resident OR Active Duty Military/Family member on assignment orders for Fort Riley or Fort Leavenworth AND reside within a commuting distance conducive to attending a face-to-face course at either Fort Riley or Fort Leavenworth.
  
  • Active Duty – Eligible to take classes, must have commander approval for E-6 and below.
    
    • Immediate Family Member – Eligible to take classes with Military ID. Must show ID when enrolling
  • Retired Military – Eligible to take classes, must show Military ID.
    
    • Immediate Family Member – Eligible to take classes with Military ID. Must show ID when enrolling
  • Guard/Reservist – Eligible to take classes, must show Military ID.
  • DOD – Eligible to take classes, must show DOD ID.
    
    • Spouse – Eligible to take classes. Sponsor must show proof of ID every 6 months when enrolling. 
    • Child – Eligible to take classes if under the age of 21. Prior to class starting, the sponsor (DOD card holder) of that child must show ID. This must be done every 6 months. 
  • Veteran – Eligible to take classes. Must provide DD-214 showing honorable discharge or Veteran ID when enrolling for classes.

Can my high school student take LSEC classes?

Yes, as long as the student is in the summer of his/her sophomore year or older and meets the qualifications above.

How do I enroll in an LSEC class?

Active Duty must enroll with the education center by completing and On-Duty Enrollment Request as well as enrolling with Barton. All other students only need to enroll with the college.

Where do I get my book?

Textbooks will be available from the Barton office as posted on the schedule. Books must be returned to the office by the posted deadline. If the book is not returned a charge will be placed on your account and you will no longer be able to take classes until you pay it or return the book.

How often do classes run?

Classes are held for six weeks at a time and there are seven cycles a year. There are three 6-week cycles in the Spring and Fall semesters and there is one 6-week cycle in the Summer semester.

When will the next schedule be out?

The LSEC class schedules are released one week after the start date of the previous cycle.

What days of the week are the classes held?

LSEC courses are held Monday through Friday at the designated time on the schedule, unless otherwise posted. Any holidays for the cycle are also posted on the schedule*

Where can I access my coursework?

In your My Barton Portal, you will be able to access your coursework via Canvas. Find the link “Access Online Courses via Canvas” and your course shell will appear in the center of your page.

When will I be able to access my coursework?

Course shells will be available on the first day of classes.

Can I take Barton Online or College Program classes at the same time?

Yes. You can work with your advisor to create a schedule that works best for you.

What changes have you made due to COVID-19?

Due to COVID-19, Barton is offering classes in-person as well as a LiveOnline delivery method. What this means is you have the option to choose how to participate. If you wish to attend class In-Person at the designated time and location, you will enroll into the In-Person CRN. If you wish to remain home and attend class via Zoom at the designated time, you will enroll into the LiveOnline CRN.
